How to Clean a Massage Table

Nov 9th 2023

A massage table is perhaps the most important piece in any massage parlor, barring the masseuse and the customer, of course. Therefore, it is important to know how to clean your massage table and ensure it is always ready to go.

Massaging requires the use of lubricants and other ointments that may help a customer feel more relaxed. This means a massage table frequently gets its fair share of liquid stains and more.

Keeping your massage table clean isn’t just a matter of aesthetics. It matters to the health and wellness of your customers as well. Plus, learning how to clean a massage table ensures the longevity of one of your most valuable assets.

Materials Required for Cleaning a Massage Table

Cleaning a massage table can involve anything from simple cleaning items like wipes and clean towels to expensive disinfectants and vacuum cleaners.

Using the right materials to clean your massage table is as important as how often you clean it.

Below are some of the materials necessary for cleaning and disinfecting your massage table:

Mild Soap and Water

You need a mild mixture of soap and water, preferably a gentle soap. The recommended ratio of soap to water mixture is 1:10, but your ratio can be different depending on your needs and the material of your massage table.

A mild mixture of soap and water used with a damp cloth is effective for wiping down massage tables, especially to clean off any oils and lotions left on the table.

Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths are recommended for cleaning surfaces prone to abrasive damage, like a massage table’s surface. Microfiber cloths ensure you can clean your valuable massage table without leaving streaks or lint.

Disinfectant Wipes

Disinfectant wipes are cheap and convenient tools for quickly wiping down your massage table after each use. Disinfectant wipes are effective in eliminating germs and bacteria while ensuring that your table is ready for use in a couple of minutes after use.

Disinfectant wipes are great for wiping down surfaces that come in direct contact with skin.

Disposable Face Cradle Covers

Disposable face cradle covers can be a game changer for keeping the face ridge section of your massage table clean. Medical-grade (this is important to avoid allergic reactions) disposable cradle covers can be used to cover the headrest and replaced easily after each client.

Spray Bottle With Disinfectant Solution

A spray bottle can be used to apply a DIY cleaning solution composed of water and a small amount of vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. This water-vinegar/alcohol solution is great for disinfecting the surface of your massage table as well. Plus, the water-vinegar/alcohol solution dries off quickly, making it suitable for busy business days.

Massage Table Cover

Massage table covers are great for keeping the massage table free from dust and other impurities that may settle on the table after you have cleaned it for the day.

Vacuum Cleaner

A vacuum cleaner equipped with a soft brush attachment is handy for removing loose debris like lint, hair, and dust from the surface of your massage table and its hard-to-reach crevices.

Soft Bristle Brush

A soft bristle brush is great for cleaning loose debris like hair, lint, and dust from the surface of the massage table.

Note: You should always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on the maintenance of your specific massage table. The materials and finishes required for each table might vary very slightly.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean a Massage Table

Now that you know some of the materials required, here is a step-by-step guide on how to clean a massage table.

Cleaning

Step 1: Ensure that you remove loose debris like dust or hair from the surface of the massage table using a soft bristle brush or vacuum equipped with soft brush attachments.

Step 2: Using your spray bottle and the mild soap mixture, spray the soap mixture onto your massage table and wipe it down using a microfiber cloth. Wipe down the entire surface area of the massage table to ensure a germ-free surface for your next client.

You can use warm water with soap for regular stains or cold water with soap for blood stains.

Avoid using detergents, bleach, or strong compounds to clean the surface of your massage table. Massage tables like the Master Massage 31” Santana Portable massage table and the Master Massage 28” Zephyr Portable massage table are oil and waterproof and typically do not require much abrasive force to clean.

Step 3: Rinse your microfiber cloth with clean water, or using a fresh microfiber cloth and fresh water, wipe the surface of your massage table clean and get rid of any soap remnants.

Step 4: Wipe down the surface of your massage table with a dry and clean microfiber cloth, then allow the table to air dry for a few minutes.

Step 5: If your massage table is not ready for use in the next 30 minutes, cover your massage table with a massage table cover.

Note: Ensure that you place the disposable cradle rest on the headrest of your massage table before every client and dispose of it after every client.

Disinfecting

To disinfect your massage table:

Step 1: After your table is dry, wipe it down with your water-alcohol mixture. Don’t soak the surface of your massage table during this process.

Step 2: Wipe the surface of your massage table with a clean and damp microfiber cloth.

Step 3: Allow your table to dry completely.

Note: The CDC provides guidelines on the best EPA-registered disinfectants to use for massage parlors and similar outlets.

How Often Should You Clean Your Massage Table?

Typically, we advise that you clean and disinfect your massage table after every massage session. This ensures that your massage table is always clean and ready to go for the next client.

A complete cleaning of the entire massage table can be done every week.
